Transportation problems

A

Difficult terrain - some places only stretcher bearers and horse wagons could be used
Many roads and railway lines had been destroyed
Constant shelling and artillery fire made recovery of injured very difficult
No motor ambulances were sent there and not enough horses to cope
Public appeal in Britain raised money for 512 motor ambulances

Carrel-dakin method

A

Solutions: Debridement (cutting away of infected tissue) & Carrel-Dakin method (a sterilised salt solution put into the wound through a tube) or amputation if nothing else worked.​

Impact: A reduction in amputation, but by 1918 240,000 men lost limbs.​
