What does “an arms race” mean?
A race between 2 or more countries based on military capability, so they can defend themselves against other countries.
What is trench warfare?
Digging in defensive positions between no man’s land where two opposing teams attack eavh other with a neutral space between them.
What is an atrocity?
An extremely cruel act, usually involving violence
What is imperialism?
When a country extends its power into other territories for economic or political gain.
What were the 4 main factors that contributed to the growing tensions between European countries in the lead up to world war 1?
The alliance system, nationalism, imperialism and militarism.
What is militarism?
Belief that all nations should build and maintain strong armed forces so they can prepare to defend themselves against attack or promote their nations interests.
What is the alliance system?
A system of agreement between 2 countries so if one is attacked, the other country can defend them (2 countries forming an alliance).
What is nationalism?
People showing loyalty or love to their nation.
