Why was Germany seen as a threat to Europe after unification?
Germany had industrialised very quickly and was seeing fast economic growth.
Germany had an experienced and strong military because of the wars they had fought for unification in 1871.
Who was in the Triple Alliance?
Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy
Who was in the Triple Entente?
France, Britain, Russia
What was the agreement that the members of the triple alliance made with each other?
The members of the alliance promised that each country would support one another if attacked by France.
Why did the members of the Triple Alliance make agreements?
These agreements were all part of Germany’s overall goals of keeping peace in Europe and isolating France.
What did the creation of the Triple Entente show?
This showed that Germany’s efforts to isolate France had not succeeded.
Why did Germany expand it’s navy in 1898?
For:
Industrial growth.
Larger German empire.
Increased German patriotism and be a symbol of strength to the world (especially to Great Britain).
What happened during the assassination of Franz Ferdinand?
Archduke Ferdinand was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne.
28 June 1914: the Archduke and his wife were in Bosnia, the area annexed by Austria-Hungary.
During the visit, the Archduke and his wife were shot by a Bosnian Serb called Gavrilo Princip.
What were the consequences of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand?
Austria-Hungary wanted to use the assassination to attack Serbia.
They believed that the Serbian government had secretly helped the assassins. Austria-Hungary asked for Germany’s help to attack Serbia.
What was the response to the consequences of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand?
Serbia asked for Russian support against the threat of Austria-Hungary and Germany.

Give 3 features of trenches and what they were used for
- Sandbags-supported the walls of the trench which often caved in
- Barbed wire-strung in front of the trenches and throughout NM’sL, made movement very difficult
- Zig zag pattern-stopped any enemy who got in the trench from shooting too far down it
Give 2 features of life in the trenches
- Food-limited, bad, rationed
* Diseases-lots or rats, rats fed on dead bodies, men got I’ll from tics, bug bites, trench foot
Why was technology important in WW1?
The two sides of the Western Front were stuck in stalemate. Both sides tried to develop bigger and better weapons to give them the advantage over their enemy
What is stalemate?
Static warfare. Both sides fairly equal in strength, neither able to break and defeat the enemy.
