Naïve narrator
Someone who tells us the story but doesn’t really understand what they are seeing. (Usually in first person) - UNRELIABLE - Get a sense of their ‘foreignness’ - Lockwood
Omniscient narrator
The narration is detached, and all knowing. Usually not a character telling the story.
Knowledgeable first person narrator
Nelly -> opinions/bias; influences us as readers - SOME RELIABILITY
Quote that shows that Lockwood is arrogant
“The circumstance determined me to accept the invitation”
Quote that shows that Lockwood isn’t terribly clever despite the fact that he thinks he is.
“Previous to inspecting the penetralium”
Quote that shows that Lockwood is afraid of emotion
“I confess with shame - shrunk icily into myself like a snail” - He doesn’t read people very well.
Reasons why Heathcliff is good
- His bond with Catherine, despite her being unwelcoming on his arrival.
- Tries to fit in with Catherine’s new friends.
- Saves Lockwood from the storm.
- Leaves to make himself suitable for Catherine
Reasons why Heathcliff is bad
- Bad relationship with Hindley
- Causes Catherine great upset when he leaves without saying anything.
- He regrets catching baby Hareton
- Punches Linton
- People use demonic imagery about him -> lexical set of darkness and blackness
Why is Wuthering Heights a ‘Stormy cloud’?
- Physical setting - exposed to winds, darkened by hills.
- Lockwood’s over reaction to the ghost
- Death
- Heathcliff’s arrival -> unwelcoming
- Hindley hates Heathcliff
Nelly calls children (especially Catherine) ‘wild’.
Why is Thrushcross Grange ‘Sunny’?
- Edgar & Catherine happy, peaceful relationship.
- Cathy becomes civilised
- Arguments are minor and petty
- Surrounded by high walls - separated from wildness of the moor.
