what is introspection?
A
- first systematic experimental attempt to study mental processes
- breaking down conscious awareness of basic structures of thoughts, images and sensations

A
- Wrote the first textbook of psychology
- Set up the first laboratory of experimental psychology (1875)
- Used the scientific method to study the nature of human consciousness
- Showed that introspection could be used to study mental states in replicable laboratory experiments.

- introspections = controlled environment in a lab = contol over extraneous variables
- standardised procedures = ppt recieved the same info and were tested in the same way
- later behaviourist approach was investigated in the same way

- relied on self reporting mental processes = subjective
- some ppt may have hidden some of their thoughts
- difficult to establish meaningful laws of behaviour = which is sciences aim
- wundts effort to study mind would not meet the criteria of scientific study today
