WS JW rules Flashcards
A just war can only be waged as a last resort. All non-violent options must be exhausted before the use of force can be justified.
Rule 1
The parties can not just jump to war, they must try ALL non-violent options (bribery, discussion, treaty or go to a third party to solve the problem UN) before starting to war.
Rule 2
A just war can only be started if approved by the state. No matter what party it is.
Rule 3
A war can only be fought to change a wrong that is causing sufferment, for the right cause that will change the country for the better.
Rule 4
A war can be fair if with a chance of success for all parties, many deaths and injuries are not morally okay.
Rule 5
A war is just when the main goal is to re-establish peace. The peace that is achieved as a result of the war must be better than the peace if the war had never occured.
Rule 6
Parties are not allowed to use force that’s not necessary to achieve the objective. No mass destruction weapons.
You can’t overreact in relation to how badly you were hurt; you can’t send an airstrike to someone’s house for punching you in the face.
Rule 7
No citizen should be harmed or targetted, every party must put in effort to avoid this. The kill of a citizen is fair if they were part of the attacking party.
