Wrong diagnosis Flashcards
error
unintended act, failure of a planned act, use of wrong plan, any deviation from process of care that may or may not cause harm to patient
pre analytical error
errors in specimen collection
non-fasted patient - lipemia
in vitro hemolysis - traumatic sample collection , improper sample handling, extreme temperatures or delayed processes
clotted - traumatic or slow collection or improper mixing with coagulant
insufficient sample volume - short sample - wrong proportion of anticoagulant to sample
delayed processing - morphologic changes
analytical errors
errors in test
sensitivity = ability to correctly detect diseased animals
specificity = ability to correctly detect non-diseased animals
screening tests
cut off value chosen
eg FIV point of care ELISA - kittens of FIV+ cats may have antibodies for up to 6 weeks
must confirm any positive results in non-prevalent population
pros and cons of screening tests
pros - quick, narrows down a group
cons - false positives common
