Anaphoric Reference
Making references back to something already identified in a text (often uses pronouns - The woman stood by the door, she could see).
Cataphoric Reference
Making reference forward to something as yet unidentified (It was warm, it was living, it was a rabbit).
Intertextuality
When lexical fields from one topic area (e.g. science) are used in a text about something else (e.g. the selling of beauty products).
Graphology
Exploring language as a semiotic system creating meaning through textual design, signs and images.
Semiotics
The study of signs, signals and images.
Signs can be iconic and symbolic.
Iconic Signs (Semiotics)
Meaning a direct picture of the thing it represents.
Symbolic Signs (Semiotics)
Can draw connotations or associations. Defined by cultural conventions. Not an actual thing but rather something that symbolizes something e.g. road signs.
