False Starts
When you begin to say something then stop to repeat or alter what you are going to say.
Accents
The way you speak and pronounce certain words depending on where you are from.
Prosodic Features
Referring to the pitch and tone of an utterance that is spoken.
Backchanneling
Words, phrases and utterances which people use to show they are taking in what is being said to them; e.g. ‘I see’ or ‘Uh huh’.
Dialect
The words or from a particular area, for example the Geordie dialect. Different to accent since this is about words, not sound.
Ideolect
The language specific to an individual. Words you might say that others may not. Traits and features in an individuals speech.
Received Pronunciation (RP)
The standard spoken language. Most prestigious accent, cant be traced back to a specific area.
Standard English
The “correct” form of English, typically referring to written language.
Fillers
Used in the beginning or middle of an utterance, gives the speaker time to think.
Interruption
Stopping someone from speaking. More negative.
Overlapping
Considered more polite than interruptions. Someone finishing off what someone else is saying.
Tag Question
Tagging a question onto the end of a sentence. e.g. “Its a lovely day, isn’t it?”
Ellipses
In speech, shortening a word, also known as contractions e.g. ‘don’t’ instead of ‘do not’
