Writing up research and managing data Flashcards
what is the open science initiative
aims:
- open journals
- open reviewing
- shared copy of data produced
- sharing methodology/expertise
- sharing educational materials
- want equal opportunities, while maintaining public safety
safely collecting and storing data
often stored on web based platforms, but could be personal drive
must be secure and password protected
anonymised and personal details removed
PPs can ask to have data removed if not summarised already
what is the purpose of research reports
They describe the entire process by which psychological knowledge develops
abstract
normally written after completing other sections
includes all parts of study in summary
introduction
A brief description of the topic of the research
Key concepts and ideas explained in some detail or defined if this is possible
Criticisms given of aspects of the relevant research literature together with synthesis where the literature clearly leads to certain conclusions
difference between descriptive statistics and inferential statistics
Descriptive statistics: describe the characteristics of your data, for example, the means and standard deviations of all of your variables, where appropriate
Inferential statistics: indicate whether your findings are statistically significant in the sense that they are unlikely to be due to chance. The correlation coefficient and t-test are examples of the sorts of inferential statistics that beginning researchers use.
