Chi squared Flashcards
what are descriptive stats
describes and summarises a set of data
- measures of central tendency
- measures if dispersion
what are inferential stats
helps predict the population characteristics from the sample characteristics
- estimating population parameters
- hypothesis testing
what is hypothesis testing
statistical tests help us to understand the probability of obtaining a result as extreme as the observed value if the null hypothesis were true
if this probability is low, we reject the null hypothesis in favour of the alternative hypothesis
how to know which statistical test to use?

what is the McNemar test
used when we have paired nominal data
we have two sets of frequency data for our participants
this is carried out in a similar way to chi-squared, but using a different approach to the null hypothesis
what is chi squared?
tests whether the frequency counts in the various nominal categories could be expected by chance or whether there is a relationship.
