Writing Terminology Flashcards

Essay
the first paragraph in an essay
introductory paragraph
a few sentences used to engage the reader and set up the thesis ideas
Hook (IS)
a sentence with a subject and interpretive commentary that serves as the single controlling idea for the essay
Thesis
a middle paragraph in an essay, which develops a point you want to make to support your thesis
Body Paragraph
the last paragraph in your essay that sums up your ideas
Concluding Paragraph
The process of getting your concrete details down on paper before you organize you essay into paragraphs
Pre-write
the first sentence in a body paragraph, containing a subject and argumentative commentary
Topic Sentence
provides context that sets up a concrete detail by introducing the speaker, setting, or situation; and provides a lead-in phrase that goes directly into your concrete detail
Signal Phrase
direct quotations; specific details that form the backbone or core of your body paragraphs
concrete details
analysis of concrete detail used to support topic sentence as well as thesis
Commentary
words or phrases that connect one idea to the next between chunks
Transition
last sentence in a body paragraph that summarizes that connections made in your paragraph
Concluding Sentences
responses and reactions to a partner’s paper
