Writing Chemical Formulas Flashcards
Metal valence number
1-3
Octet Rule/Rule of 8
Given an opportunity atoms will gain/lose valence electrons to become stable
Non metal valence number
5-7
If substance has 4 valence?
Can go either way based on line.
Non reactive valence number
8
Ionic Bond
Hold together oppositely charged ions to form molecules/compounds
Ex: Na2O (Sodium oxide)
Ionic nomenclature
First name will always be name of positive ion. Use Roman numeral to tell the change of special metals. The second name will always be the name of the negative ion. If the negative ion is a single element, get the name from the periodic table and use IDE ending. If the negative ion contains multiple elements use group name.
Covalent Bond
A bond that only exists between non-metals. A tug-of-war over valence electrons. Both nuclei pull on the same valence electrons. Neither atom gained or lost electrons.
Covalent Nomenclature
First name of the first nonmetal closest to the line from the periodic table. Use prefix to tell how many atoms. Never use prefix of mono. Second name the other nonmetal from the periodic table and use the IDE ending. Use prefix to tell how many atoms.
Prefixes in order 1-10
Mono, di or bi, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hepta, octa, Nona, deca
