Diction
The choice of words a writer uses, especially with regard to correctness, clearness, or effectiveness.
Tone
The characteristic emotion that pervades a work
Syntax
The manner in which words are poor together to form phrases, clauses, or sentences.
Colloquial
Everyday, conversational language
Formal
Adhering to a high standard of form semicol one absent of cliche’s, slang, colloquial language, and abbreviated forms of expression.
Allusion
Direct or indirect reference to personal, contemporary, historical, literary, or Biblical knowledge.
Imagery
The creation of pictures that are conjured through exacting words that engage the readers’ senses.
Exposition
A type of writing that explains.
Objectivity
The ability of a person to remain neutral toward a subject.
Antithesis
The contrast of ideas; negation
Style
The overall effect of an author’s craft, derived from the sum total of literary techniques and devices used by that writer.
Genre
A french word meaning category or type: tragedy, short story, essay, novella, e.g. (applies to media also)
Rhetoric
The art of using words effectively in speaking or writing
Pedantic
Tediously learned; scholarly in a dull and narrow way
Sardonic
Disdainfully or bitterly sneering or sarcastic
