A

1944-45 - Stalin’s Soviet Red army frees many countries from the Nazis in advance towards west Germany

End of war - Stalin reluctant to give up control - they were useful buffer zones between USSR and Germany
1945 - Bulgari, communist gov elected, all elected non-communists executed.
1945 - Hungar, communists lose elections, Rakoski takes control of the secret police, executed + imprisoned opponents, Hungary turned into a communist state.
1947 - Romania’s Communist-led coalition takes over, by 1947, Romania become a one-party communist state.
1947 - At Yalta Stalin agrees on communist/no-communist gov, 1947 invites 16 non-communists to Moscow, arrests them, communist gov “won” 1947 election.
1948 - Communists seize power in Czechoslovakia, previously Edward Benes set up coalition gov, communists control secret police, radio + army.
1949 - Original Soviet zone of occupation in Germany becomes a communist state.

Nov 1943- Tehran conference, good relations, Stalin reassured that West was not trying to weaken East by delaying the second front.
May 1945 -VE day, no longer a need for a wartime alliance, relations not as good
July 1945 - Postdam conference, Roosevelt is dead, mutual suspicion between Roosevelt and Staling, no agreement made, Stalin wanted Germany to pay heavy reparations, Truman disagreed. Truman objected to soviet control of satellite states, international relations got a lot worse.
August 1945 - Nuclear bomb was dropped on Japan.
February 1946 - Kennan Long telegram, worried American government, Peace between USSR and US were impossible.
September 1946, Novikov telegram, USA preparing its people for war with USSR. USSR only country left after the war that could stand up to the US.
