Wrist and Hand Sprains Flashcards
Sprains at the wrist are primarily caused by what?
- Hyperextension mechanism with a FOOSH
What do sprains at the wrist typically involve?
Flexor retinaculum and associated ligaments
What is the flexor retinaculum?
Fibrous band on the volar wrist
Where does the flexor retinaculum attach?
Attaches from the pisiform and hamate to the scaphoid and trapezium
What are the functions of the flexor retinaculum?
- Holds flexor tendons
- Supports carpal arch as most activities performed with wrist extend
- Limits hyperextension
What do the collateral ligaments support in the wrist and fingers?
Support radiocarpal, ulnotriquetral, MCP and IP joints medially and laterally
Medial or ulnar collateral ligaments limit _____ stresses.
Valgus
Lateral or radial collateral ligaments limit _____ stresses.
Varus
What is skier’s/ gamekeeper’s thumb?
- Involves ulnar collateral ligament at at thumb MCP joint
- Excessive valgus stress with hyperextension and abduction during a FOOSH
What are signs and symptoms of a sprain?
What is the PT Rx for sprains?
