WRIST AND HAND BONES Flashcards
What are carpometacarpal joints?
Five joints that articulate the distal row of carpal bones and the proximal bases of the five metacarpal bones
They increase hand flexibility.
What type of joint is the trapeziometacarpal joint?
Saddle joint
It is one of the most specialized and flexible joints of the human body.
Where are metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP) located?
Between the metacarpal bones and the proximal phalanges of the fingers
What joints are situated between the phalanges?
Proximal and distal interphalangeal joints
What bones compose the feet?
Tarsal, metatarsal, and phalanges bones
What are the three sections of the foot?
Hindfoot, midfoot, forefoot
Each section has distinct bones and functions.
What forms the hindfoot?
Heel and ankle
The talus supports the leg bones (tibia) and forms the ankle joint; the calcaneus is the largest bone in the foot.
What bones are included in the midfoot?
Three cuneiform bones, cuboid bone, navicular bone
These are tarsal bones that form the arches of the feet.
What does the forefoot consist of?
Five longer bones (metatarsals) and five toes (phalanges)
What type of joint is the ankle joint?
Hinge joint
Formed by the tibia and talus.
What are the main movements that occur at the ankle joint?
Plantarflexion and dorsiflexion
How is stability provided to the ankle joint?
Through two groups of ligaments: lateral and medial ligaments
What does the ankle joint resist during normal walking and physical activities?
High mechanical stresses of several times our body weight
What type of joint is the subtalar joint?
Plane joint
Also known as the talocalcaneal joint.
What bones form the subtalar joint?
Talus and calcaneus
What movements does the subtalar joint allow?
Eversion and inversion
What is the role of the subtalar joint?
Provides mobility to the foot and adapts to variation in surfaces
