wrist and hand Flashcards
CARPAL BONES
8 per hand
4 per row
METACARPALS
5 per hand
1 per finger
articulate with the distal row of the
carpal bones
Bases of the metacarpals
form the knuckles, articulate with
the proximal phalanges
Heads of the metacarpals
slightly concave forward and
triangular in transverse section
Body of each metacarpal
phalanges
14
Per hand
3 per finger
except thumb with 2
strong bands of deep fascia that hold the long FLEXOR tendons in position at the wrist
FLEXOR RETINACULUM
strong bands of deep fascia that hold the long EXTENSOR tendons in position at the wrist
EXTENSOR RETINACULUM
an osteofascial tunnel for the
passage of the median nerve
and the flexor tendons of the
thumb and fingers
carpal tunnel
• compression of the median
nerve as it passes through the
carpal tunnel
• caused by pinching and gripping
activities with the wrist bent
• made worse with repetitive
flexion and extension activities at
the wrists
CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
triangular
- occupies central area of palm
- apex attached to the distal
border of the flexor
retinaculum
- base divides at the bases of
the fingers into 4 slips
PALMAR APONEUROSIS
- strong fibrous sheath at the
anterior surface of each finger,
from the head of the metacarpal
to the base of the distal phalanx - proximal end is open, whereas
the distal end is closed
FIBROUS FLEXOR SHEATHS
allow the long tendons to move
smoothly, with a minimum of
friction, beneath the flexor
retinaculum and the fibrous flexor
sheaths
a. Radial bursa
b. Ulnar bursa
SYNOVIAL FLEXOR SHEATHS
SMALL MUSCLES OF THE HAND
