Wrist Flashcards
What kind of joint is the wrist joint
Radio carpal joint which is a complex biaxial synovial joint
Name the three carpal bones the wrist connects the fore arm to the hand
Lunate
Scaphoid
Triquetrum
The order of the carpal bones
Scaphoid First
Lunate 2nd
Triquetrum 3rd
Where does the radio carpal joint lie
At the proximal wrist crease
Where you see your veins
How many carpal bones are there
8
There are 8 carpal bones they are divided into
Distal and proximal
4 each
What is one the proximal row( running from thumb to pinky)
Scaphoid
Lunate
Triquetral
Pisiform
Distal row?
Trapezium 1st
Trapezoid 2nd
Capitate 3rd
Hamate 4th
What is importance thing about articular discs
There is no direct contact between the carpals and The end of the ulna so the disc cartilaginous in nature bridges the gap and increases the congruence between the ulna and the carpal
The wrist joint is proximally and distally formed. what is the proximal part made of?
The distal end of the radius and articular disc
Distal part?
3 proximal carpal bones
The following are proximal carpal bones except
Scaphoid
Pisiform
Lunate
Triquetral
Pisiform
The ulna is part of the wrist true or false
False
How many joints are in the wrist and name them
Radiocarpal joint
Ulnocarpal joint
Distal radioulnar joint
What’s the radiocarpal joint
Where the radius joins the first row of wrist bones (the proximal carpal bones scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum)
What’s the ulnocarpal joint
Where the ulna meets the lunate and triquetrum
Distal radioulnar joint?
Where the radius and ulna connect (forearm bones)
How many ligaments are there in the wrist and what are they
Palmar radiocarpal
Dorsal radiocarpal
Ulna collateral
Radial collateral
How is the palmar radiocarpal ligament
Runs from the Distal end of the radius and runs to the anterior surface of the proximal carpal bones
How’s the dorsal radiocarpal
Begins from the lower end of the radius and runs downwards and attaches to the dorsal surface of the proximal carpal bones
How’s the ulna collateral
it’s extends from the tip of the styloid process of the ulna to the triquetrum and Pisiform bones
How’s the radial collateral ligaments
It’s extends from the styloid process of the radius to the lateral side of the scaphoid bone and trapezium
What is the blood supply of the wrist
It receives blood from the branches of the dorsal and Palmar carpal arches derived from the radial and ulnar arteries
What is the superficial palmar arch made off
Ulna artery plus superficial branch of radial artery
What is the deep Palmar arch made of
It is made of the radial artery plus deep branch of Ulna artery
How many nerve branches do the wrist have?
3 . they are
Radial nerve
Ulna nerve and
median nerve
What are the nerve branches of the radial, ulna and median nerve
Radial nerve- posterior interosseous branch
Ulna nerve- anterior interosseous branch
Median nerve- deep and dorsal branches
What is the autonomous testing site for the median nerve and ulna nerve
The tip of the index finger and the pinky finger respectively
What causes collen fracture (most common)
Caused by falling onto an outstretched wrist
What happens in Collen’s fracture
It’s affects the radius and displaces the distal fragment posteriorly and the ulna styloid process can be damaged and this avulsed in majority of cases
The condition diner’s fork deformity is caused by
Collen’s fracture
What is the most commonly fractured carpal bone
Scaphoid bone
What causes scaphoid fracture
Falling on an outstretched hand (foosh)
What is the scaphoid bone prone to on fracture
Avascular necrosis
Meaning of avascular necrosis of the scaphoid bone
Meaning it may interrupt the blood supply of the proximal parts of the scaphoid bone leaving it avascular
