A

Tests for scaphoid fracture. Make athlete create the anatomical snuffbox and you palpate it. Positive result is pain

Describe Finkelstein’s test

A

Test for DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis. Athlete holds arm out to side, wraps fingers around thumb. You grip their hand and bend it sideways (towards the little finger/ ulnar side of hand). Positive result is pain

Describe Phalen’s and reverse Phalen’s test?

A

Phalen’s: Testing for carpal tunnel syndrome. Athlete presses backs of hands together to force wrists into flexion. Hold for 30s. Positive result is pins and needles on palmar aspect of hand across thumb, index and middle finger and inner half of ring finger. Reverse phalen’s is the same but with hands in prayer

Describe Tinel’s test

A

Testing for carpal tunnel syndrome. Tap the carpal tunnel for about 30s to see if you can bring on symptoms. Positive result is pins and needles on palmar aspect of hand across thumb, index and middle finger and inner half of ring finger.

Describe Cozen’s test

A

Testing for lateral epicondylitis. Seated with forearm on bed but wrist hanging off. Get them to make a fist. They extend (ie bend back) their wrist and turn hand in a little (radial deviation). You try and bring them out of it. Positive result is pain and/ or weakness

Describe Mill’s test

A

Testing for lateral epicondylitis. Find their lateral epicondyle (easiest with elbow bent). Then they hold arm out straight in front. With your other hand you flex their wrist and turn out it a little (ulnar deviation), while palpating the lateral epicondyle with your first hand. Positive result is pain around lateral epicondyle

Describe Maudsley’s test?

A

This is to test whether tennis elbow like pain is specifically extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon or is it common extensor tendon. They hold their hand out palm face down. You try and press their middle finger downwards and they resist. Positive result is pain and/ or weakness

Describe the waiter’s tip test

A

Testing for lateral epicondylitis. They’re standing up, flex their wrist and extend shoulder like they’re trying to do a deal with someone behind them. Positive result is pain (Might do this one first because it quite easily gives a false negative – if you get a positive for this you might not need to do the others)

A

They make an ok sign with thumb and finger. You hook a finger inside and pull
