Wound Management Flashcards
What are the functions of the skin?
Protection - barier between internal and external environment
Temerature control : sweating, flushing, goosebumbs, hairs
Emliniation: toxins, excess fluid
Synthesis: Vit D
Senseation: detected though nerve endings
What are the 4 phases of wound healing?
Haemstasis, Inflammation, Proliferation, Remodelling
Desribe what happens during the Haemostasis phase of wound healing?
This is the bodies vascular response to a wound
Blood vessels at the wound site constrict to stop bleeding
Injued Blood vessels release clotting fators and fibrin begins to form a platelet plug which stops bleeding and acts as a barrier to bacteria.
Desribe what happens during the Inflammation phase of wound healing?
Blood vessels begin to dilate due to histamine being released
Pain and sweeling occurs at teho wund site due to the increased blood flow.
Fluid at the wound site carries WBC, Macrophages and neutrophills which clean the wound.
Desribe what happens during the Proliferation phase of wound healing?
FIbroblasts have arrived at the wound site and begin to reapir blood vessels
Epidermal cells migrate from outside of the wound edge
Granulation tissue forms
Desribe what happens during the remodelling phase of wound healing?
Fibroblasts secrete collagen which strengthens the wound
Wound contracts to increase tissue integity
Epidermal cells grow over connetive tissue to close the wound
What are some intrinsic factors that can affect wound healing?
Age: less collogen production, poor venus return, thinning of epdermis
Pre-existing Disease: diabetes, renal disease anaemia
Stress: decrease slee due to stress! Wound healing requires sleep as growth hormones are released that stimulate protein synthesis and fibroblast proliferation.
Nutrition
What are some extrinsic factors that can affect wound healing?
Smoking
Medication
Inapropriate Wound Management
What should you look for when assessing wound bed tissue?
Moisture: the right amount of mositiure encourages wound healing
Colour: Pale pink or red os good, yellow could indicate slough, and black indicates necrotic or dead tissue
Epithelialisation : signs of new tissue growth
