Wound healing Flashcards
1
Q
All stages of wound healing?
A
- Hemostasis
- Inflammation
- Proliferation
- Maturation
2
Q
What happens during hemostasis?
A
- The vessels vasoconstrict, retracting vessels away from the wound to reduce further blood loss
- Platelets clump around the site of injury to prevent blood loss with their sticky tendrils
- A mesh of fibrin proteins helps to keep the platelets clumped together
- The cytokines send a message to the vessels to vasodilate/swelll in order to allow WBC’s to enter
- The WBC’s (neutrophils and macrophages) eat the bacteria to prevent bacterial infection
3
Q
What happens during inflammation?
A
- Macrophages feast on bacteria.
- The white blood cells, growth factors, nutrients and enzymes create redness (erythema) , swelling, pain and warmth.
4
Q
What happens during proliferation?
A
- The wound fills with granulation tissue (red and beefy).
- Capillaries regrow into the wound site to deliver nourishing oxygen.
- The epithelium begins to cover the wound site.
- Macrophages continue to eat bacteria ( you can count this as a step or not)
- Wound margins contract (the wound becomes smaller)
5
Q
What happens during maturation?
A
- The tissue is reinforced by collagen
- The cells (granulation tissue) used during the proliferative stages are removed through apoptosis (cell death).
