Q

What happens during hemostasis?

A
  1. The vessels vasoconstrict, retracting vessels away from the wound to reduce further blood loss
  2. Platelets clump around the site of injury to prevent blood loss with their sticky tendrils
  3. A mesh of fibrin proteins helps to keep the platelets clumped together
  4. The cytokines send a message to the vessels to vasodilate/swelll in order to allow WBC’s to enter
  5. The WBC’s (neutrophils and macrophages) eat the bacteria to prevent bacterial infection

Q

What happens during inflammation?

A
  1. Macrophages feast on bacteria.
  2. The white blood cells, growth factors, nutrients and enzymes create redness (erythema) , swelling, pain and warmth.

Q

What happens during proliferation?

A
  1. The wound fills with granulation tissue (red and beefy).
  2. Capillaries regrow into the wound site to deliver nourishing oxygen.
  3. The epithelium begins to cover the wound site.
  4. Macrophages continue to eat bacteria ( you can count this as a step or not)
  5. Wound margins contract (the wound becomes smaller)

Q

What happens during maturation?

A
  1. The tissue is reinforced by collagen
  2. The cells (granulation tissue) used during the proliferative stages are removed through apoptosis (cell death).
