Wound Dresssings Flashcards
Alginate
From algae or seaweed. Exuding wounds. Stage 2 -4 pressure ulcers. May dehydrate wound bed.
Dry Eschar.
Antimicrobial
Antiseptic agent. Kill or inhibit growth of microorganisms. From silver, iodine, phmb, chg, dacc. Provide antimicrobial or antibacterial activity. Reduce infection. Control bacteria bioburden. For patients with known sensitivity of any product component.
Collagen
Sheets, pads, powders and gels from bovine, equine, avian , porcine collagen. Absorbent, maintain moist , used with topical, conformable, non adherent , easy to apply / remove. For partial or full thickness wounds. Dry wounds / third degree burns.
Composite
Provide multiple functions - bacterial barrier, absorption, adhesion. For primary or secondary dressing , partial or full thickness , 1-4 pressure ulcers, dermal ulcers, surgical incisions. Moldable, with infected wounds, easy to apply/ remove, with topical.
Contact layer
Thin, non-adherent, sheets made of woven or perforated material. Placed on an open wound bed to protect tissue from direct contact with wound dressing. Pads, sheets, rolls.
On partial or full thickness wounds with minimal to heavey exudate, donor sites, split thickness skin grafts.
Foam
Absorb fluid (exudate) that comes from some pressure ulcer wounds and to maintain moist environment. Easy to apply and remove. Non-adherent. Atraumatic removal. For minimally to heavily exudating partial and full thickness wounds such as 2-4 pressure ulcers , surgical wounds, and dermal ulcers. For infected wounds, tunneling, or cavity.
Gauze and non-woven
Cotton, polyester, or rayon. With or without adhesive border. Cleaning, packing, and covering a variety of wounds. Flexible , cut to fit, compatible with topical , absorbent, . As a primary or secondary over light to moderately draining wounds.
Gelling fiber
Absorbent wound covers that hep manage drainage and removal of dead, damaged, and infected tissue from the wound. A gel forms. Assists with maintaining a moist environment. Flexible , various sizes. For chronic acute, and partial or full thickness wounds as well as various ulcers, pressure injuries, and burns
Hydrocolloid
Mildly exuding wounds like minor burns or bed sores. Waterproof , occlusive or semi occlusive made of gelatin , pectin, or cmc. Paste, powder, gel, sheet, water forms. Provide a moist wound healing. Gel on contact with exudate.
Hydrogel (amorphous, impregnated,sheets)
Water based for wound hydration. Can be used on infected wound. Dry to mildly exudating and can be used to degrade slough on the wound surface. Insoluble hydrophilic polymers which swell up in contact with water
Impregnated
Gauzes and worn- woven sponges , ropes, or strips saturated with a solution,an emulsion, oil, promote healing in necrotic , draining or infected wounds . Commonly used with saline, oil, zinc salts, petrolatum, xeroform, and scarlet red.
Medical grade honey
Contain active leptospermum honey, or manuka honey, to prepare wound bed and promote an optimal healing environment , reducing edema, lowering wound ph, and promoting autolytic debridement of slough and Eschar
Silicone gel sheets
Soft flexible self-adhesive covers that contains silicone and improve the color height texture of a scar. Used in treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars.
Specialty absorptive and super absorbent
Multilayered wound covers that provide a semi-adherent quality or a non-adherent layer combined with highly absorptive layers of fibers such as cellulose, cotton, or rayon. Minimize adherence of the wound and manage exudate.
Transparent film
Transparent polymer membranes of varying thickness coated on one side with an adhesive. Impermeable to liquid, water, and bacteria . Permeable to moisture vapor and atmospheric gases. Prevent or reduce friction. Not to be used with wounds with moderate or heavy exudate.
Wound fillers
Fill dead space. Beads, creams, foams, gels, ointment, pads, pastes, pillows, powders, strands, or formulations that are non-adherent. Maintain moist environment and manage exudate.
