Purpose of Worship
Pay homage, show deep love, deepen relationship, show reverence
Liturgical worship
A priest leads the congregation through formal prayers with set responses
What happens during liturgical worship?
Bible passages read out (gospels), sermon based on Bible passages, symbolic actions by Priest, hymns sung by choir, chanting by priest
When is Christian’s weekly public worship
Sunday (the Sabbath), day of Jesus’ resurrection
Non-Liturgical Worship
No set ritual - different parts can be changed for themes or special purposes - basic structure may remain the same but with changes to order by preacher, diff number of hymns/ type of prayer
Informal Worship
Spontaneous prayers/ sharing of thoughts (Quaker, Community/House Churches, Pentecostal)
Quaker Worship
Silent until a person feels God’s spirit moving them to offer thoughts/prayers/readings
Community/House Churches
Eat together & share faith, recreate worship of Early Church
Pentecostal Church
“Charismatic”, “led by the Spirit”, dancing, clapping, calling out, speaking in tongues
Benefits of informal worship
Easier to experience God’s holy spirit, better expression of individual Christianity
Liturgical Worship Benefits
Worldwide set order of service familiar to all, ritual passed down through generations, Bible readings follow Christian calendar & Christian history & faith taught, forgiveness of God through action of priest, living presence of Jesus Holy Communion
Non-liturgical benefits
Style of worship follows early Christians (met to hear about jesus joy of spirit after Pentecost), faith expressed in variety, personal interpretations of bible, can take active part in church without formal training, feeling of personal revelation, emotional impact
Private worship
Individuals spending time with god either alone or with close friends or family. Involves prayer/meditation(e.g. on Bible passage)/studying - may use aids e.g. icon/rosary

In meeting houses, in circle as equals, if someone wants to stand up and speak in response to thought or wider beliefs can (give ministry), no set prayers/sermons etc

Practice charismatic worship/worship God w whole body, belief that holy spirit is present
