Worldview - Review Sheet Flashcards
Be able to draw and explain the belief pyramid.
At the bottom are “Beliefs” those beliefs determine our “Values” which determine how we will act
Be able to define absolute truth
Absolute truth is something that is true for ALL people, at ALL times, and in ALL places
Be able to explain the “law of non-contradiction” and apply it to the Jesus is “lord, liar, or lunatic” argument.
The L.O.N says that two statements that contradict one another CANNOT both be true. For example, I cannot be 6’ tall and 5’6 at the same time.
Therefore, those who say that Jesus was just a good man, or a good teacher are wrong because Jesus claimed to BE GOD. If he ISN’T God then to say this was a lie and therefore he must be a liar (and therefore NOT a good teacher) or he was a lunatic (and therefore NOT a good person). Thus, if Jesus was a good teacher, a good person and claimed to BE GOD…. He must be LORD because he cannot be a liar or a lunatic.
Be able to explain what is wrong with the statement “The Bible is true because I believe it is true”
My belief in something does not make it true. I can believe I am a unicorn, but that does not make it true. My beliefs do not always match reality. Therefore, I cannot base the Bible’s truth on my beliefs alone I must also use historical and geographical facts to base its reliability.
Be able to explain why the new definition of tolerance makes it hard to have good discussion about religion and morality.
The new definition states that each person’s view must be respected and viewed as EQUALLY true to other views. This makes having genuine discussions difficult because there is no absolute truth- there are many versions of truth- each according to one’s views.
Know the SW definition of a Worldview?
A set of beliefs which determines one’s perception of reality and how they will act within it.
Know the five big philosophical questions that define a person’s worldview.
What is real? (Metaphysics)
Who or what is God? (Theology)
Who is man? (Anthropology)
How do we know what we know? (Epistomology)
What is the basis of right and wrong? (Ethics)
