From 1914 - 1918
What were the reasons for WW1?
Aggressive Nationalism, Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand (the Austrian throne) and constant hostility between empires.
What is Nationalism?
An ideology where the people have a love for and prioritise their country.
What is trenchfoot and how was it caused?
Trenchfoot (gangrene infection) was the decomposing of feet this happened when trenches flooded.
What does Entente mean?
A friendly understanding or informal alliance between states or factions.
When did ANZAC troops land at Gallipoli?
25th April 1915.
What was the August offensive?
A final push from the ANZACs to win the Gallipoli peninsula.
What was the most successful part of Gallipoli? Was the attack a success?
The most successful aspect of the Gallipoli campaign was the way the ANZACs evacuated with minimal casualties. The attack was a failure.
What was the ANZAC spirit/legend?
The ANZAC troops displayed courage, endurance, initiative, discipline and mateship. The legend embodies what ANZAC troops had to go through and the characteristics of Australians.
Compare Ally trenches with German trenchces.
German trenches were neat, tidy, organized and well-fortified. They had toilets, sleeping quarters and dug-outs. High-ground.
Ally trenches were dirty and uncomfortable. They were flooded easily and had many diseases and were on the low ground.
List the weapons of WW1. Describe if possible.
Poison gas, artillery, barbed wire, machine guns, flame throwers, rifles, grenades, tanks.
What is shell shock?
Traumatising. Caused affects such as unsteady walking, loss of bodily functions and control, random spasms and amnesia.
What did Australian women do during World War 1?
The women had to step into male roles and supported how they could.
- Volunteer work - the main source of work.
- Females in the workforce (Australia didn’t have forced conscription so the number of women in the workforce was not as great as other countries).
Why couldn’t Aboriginal people go to War?
Aboriginal people were under a ‘protection act’ which basically meant they were under government control. Only people with European descent could go to war - they had to prove they had one or more European parent.
Why did soldiers want to go to war?
To serve their country, sought adventure overseas, higher pay, wanted to prove their worth.
