When was there Mass Migration and why?
The 20th century - People seeked better lives such as economic and social opportunity and religious freedom.
What was the world characterised by in the 1800’s?
Colonisation - the more land you had, the more power you had.
When was the industrial revolution?
From the 18th-19th century.
What did the increase of Agricultural Production allow?
Boosted trade, expansion of colonies, expanded population and travel.
What is the Industrial Revolution
The transformation from agrarian (cultivation of land) and handicraft economies in Europe and America to industrial, urbanized economies.
Why do populations grow?
Increased migration and movement towards areas, improvements in the medical field (increase chance of survival &cure of disease), readily available food sources.
What is the definition of Slavery?
The permanent, violent and personal domination of natally (at the time of birth) alienated and generally dishonored people.
What was the Triangular slave trade?
Ships with European goods –> sailed to Africa –> collected slaves —> sailed to America –> American trade goods- sugar and cotton —–> Taken to Europe.
How many people were slaves in the TST? How many died?
10 - 12 million people were forcibly moved from Africa to the Americas and Europe. 15% died.
What happened to convicts who committed crimes?
They were put in jail. If the jails were full, they were put in ‘hulks’. Otherwise, they were put in transportation.
Why was transportation bad? How long was each sentence?
Transportation had bad conditions such as a lack of food and water and ships carried rats and disease. Prisoners were often kept in cramped areas with other prisoners. Sentences were generally 7 years.
