Ypres- Why was the location important to whoever controlled it?

A

There were two battles of Ypres
~First battle of Ypres: (allies vs Germans)~
•One was not a soldier unless he served on the Yepres front.”
•Nicknamed: “the salient”
•Leaders: FR, GB, GERM
•Not much gained after battle…attrition: fighting just to fight/kill.*
~Second battle of Ypres~
•First use of poison gas by Germany (allies were surprised by this)
•France and GB started to retreat…heavy German assault

The Schlieffen Plan

A

•Created by General Alfred Fraf Von Schlieffen
•Plan to avoid 2 front war:
1.Attack France
2.Attack Russia (they were thought to be slow)
Germany attacks France through Belgium ignoring their refusal. Belgium declares war on Germany. Meltke led troops into heavily fortified areas, and Russian troops mobilized quickly.

  • Driven back by the Turks who were very well armed, allies gave up and Russia withdrew from the war
