When did World War I take place?
Fighting started in 1914. Armistice was signed November 11 1918 which ends fighting.
Where did it take place?
The war was fought in Europe with two main fronts-Eastern(Russia and Germany) and Western(France and Belgium). Australian forces fought in Gallipoli.
Who was involved?
Members of the British Commonwealth such as Australia, India, South Africa, Canada and New Zealand were obligated to go to war because Britain went. France; Russia; Austria-Hungary; Germany; Italy; Serbia and Turkey were also involved.
What led to war?
The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is known as the trigger which began the war however the war had been brewing for several years previously. Several reason can be given for the outbreak of World War 1 such as imperialism, nationalism, militarism and the alliance system.
In Australia, what different perspectives did people have about the War?
Many Australians saw heading to war as a sign of becoming a man and fulfilling your duties. Many soldiers expected to see the world and acted like they were going to travel the world and many wonderful experiences. Once Australians realised the slaughter they were sending there men into they weren’t so keen to send them.
What changed as a result of war?
Planes developed vastly throughout the duration of the war. At the beginning of the war they war used for photographic purposes being the eyes in the sky but eventually were developed to hold weapons and be able to fight in the sky as well as on the ground. Bomber planes were developed that could be very lethal. The introduction and banning of chemical warfare was created. In 1916 tanks were developed and sent on the battlefields. Underwater mines and submarines were established. Morse code and communication advancements enabled tactical decisions to be made quicker.
How has World War I impacted on modern Australia?
As a result of the war we have Remembrance Day and ANZAC day to make sure we never forget what happened in those times. Being a newly federated country Australia’s population was growing but still small the war resulted in 215 585 men dying this was a lot of men considering the amount of people that were there to begin with. The war was the Birth of the ANZACs. The cost of war is incredibly expensive this had a major impact on the Australian economy.
