Describe the MAIN long term causes of WW1
Militarism: prepare for war
Alliances: public and secret European alliances
Imperialism: vast empires in foreign lands which increased competition for more territory, greater economy
Nationalism: strong pride in your country
What was Americas official position at the beginning of the war?
Americas first position was to stay neutral
What were the causes of the US joining the war on the side of the Allie’s?
Germany bombing Lustiana Marine in US, killed many Americans.
The Zimmerman telegram, Germany encouraged Mexico to invade US in case of attack.
Describe the Zimmerman telegraph?
Zimmerman telegraph convinced Americans to join the war. The telegram was sent by Arthur Zimmerman to Mexico to ask them to attack US if US declared war on Germany.
What types of changes were made on the home front during WW1?
Liberty Bonds: to finance the war
Recycling: reduce waste
Daylight saving times: move clock one hour ahead to save energy
Women and African Americans found work filled by white men
Explain the cause and effect of the Great Migration?
CAUSE: white men being drafted for war, immigration in Europe stopped, many African Americans left the south to move to northern cities.
EFFECT: boost in local economy, increased cultural diversity, created the first large, urban black communities in the North.
Explain the domestic impact of the Espionage Act?
Espionage act punished the people who spoke ill of the government. (People who were disloyal or interference with war efforts)
Who was Eugene Debs?
Eugene Debs was a socialist leader. He was arrested for his speeches against the war and encouraging men not to fight in war.
Explain Wilson’s Fourteen Points plan?
Fourteen Point Plan was a list of terms by Woodrow to end WW1 and prevent future wars. It’s purpose was to bring about a world government run by popular votes and open discussion. Free trade, freedom of seas, disarmament, open diplomacy (negotiations), open adjustments of colonial claim.
Did the US join the League of Nations? Why or why not?
The US did not join the League of Nations because Congress thought it made the US too involved in European affairs.
