What is Indian Music?
Indian music is easily recognised by the sound of its unique musical scales and instruments.
Traditionally, Indian musicians learn to play patterns of notes - ragas - by imitating and memorising music passed on from their teachers.

What is the sitar?
The sitar is a long-necked, stringed instrument with six or seven main strings that have twelve or more strings running underneath them
What is the tabla?
The tabla is a pair of drums played side by side while sitting on the floor. They have a high pitched sound. They can be played with the hand and fingertips to produce different sounds.
What is distinctive about African Music?
It is sung acappella, songs are used for every occasion including lullabies, childrens’ games, birthdays, marriages, funerals and the more formal situations like religious, political and tribal events. Songs are usually strophic, and often call and repsonse.
What Influence did African Music have on other styles?
Elements can be heard in blues, gospel, jazz and Latin American music due to the historic movement of African slaves to the Americas.
What is Latin American music?
Latin American music is the term used when referring to music from the Spanish or Portuguese speaking countries of Mexico, most of Central and South America, and the Caribbean islands.
What is significant about Latin American music?
Latin American music can often be recognised by the percussion instruments used. Many ensembles use:
bongo drums
congas - tall drums played with the hand
claves - two rounded sticks hit together
shakers
scrapers
cowbells
a variety of small drums played with sticks

Salsa, Rumba, Cha-cha, Merengue, Samba, Bossa Nova, Tango
What are some Latin American Instruments?
Castanets, Bongo drums, pan pipes
What is a steel band?
The steel bands are made up of a variety of different sized steel pans as well as a percussion section of drum kit and other hand-held percussion instruments. Steel bands often play calypso tunes but also play other folk, classical and pop music.
