Define Human Development Index
A system developed in order to “rank” how developed countries have become. The scale ranges from 0-1 (zero being not at all developed and one being the most developed). There are 4 categories that are scored and averaged out for a country to receive this score.
Define Population Density
How many people live in a place. (Avg # of people per sq. Mile)
Define Population Distribution
Where people live in a given areas. (Ex: hubs in New York like Queens or Brooklyn)
Define crude birth rate (CBR)
Number of live births in one calendar year per 1000 people.
Define crude death rate (CDR)
Number of deaths in one calendar year per 1000 people
Define the rate of natural increase (RNI)
Crude birth rate - crude death rate
Define Infant Mortality rate (IMR)
Deaths of children less than one year old who die per 1000
Define child mortality rate (CMR)
Deaths of kids ages1-5 who die per 1000
Define Infrastructure
Organizational structures and facilities needed for a society to function and thrive. (Ex: indoor plumbing or roadways)
What is a democracy?
When citizens are involved in decision making and are responsible for gov. action to varying levels
What is a theocracy?
Religious leader is also the government leader
What is a Dictatorship?
One person is ruler and has total control
What is an oligarchy?
Small group of “ELITES” who rule
What is a monarchy?
King or Queen is in charge to some extent depending on what type of monarchy.
What is a push factor?
Reasons people leave from their country of origin. (Negative ex: war)
What is a pull factor?
Reasons people move to a new location (Positive ex. religious freedom)
What is emigration?
The term is used when a person is EXITING a country
What is Immigration?
The term is used when a person is going into a country.
What is urbanization?
The increase of people living in urban areas (cities)
Define Subsistence Farming
Small scale farming where the farmer is only producing enough for their family or small community.
Define Commercial Farming
Large scale farming, industrial, commercial, for profit
Define Traditional economy
Communities that use a barter system or trade instead of monetarily purchasing goods
Define Command economy
The government holds the power and makes economic decisions (Ex: China)
Free Market economy
Citizens are responsible for dictating how the economy flows. Supply and demand are king. (Ex: Japan)
Define Mixed Economy
Profit is the main driver, but the government haas a hand in what happens too. (Ex: France)
