Natural Event
A natural phenomena, occurrence or process like a volcanic eruption or flood.
Natural Hazard
A naturally occurring process or event that has the potential to cause loss of life or damage to property.
Natural Disaster
A natural hazard that causes widespread death and/ or destruction.
For a disaster to be entered into the database of CRED (Centre of Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters) at least one of the following criteria must be fulfilled:
10 or more people reported killed
100 people reported affected
Declaration of a state of emergency
Call for international assistance

Hydro-meteorological hazards
Hazards caused by running and its processes (hydro) and those associated with or caused by weather patterns (meteorological) e.g cyclones, droughts and floods.
Geophysical hazards
Hazards caused by earth processes including those caused by internal earth processes (tectonic hazards) and those caused by external earth processes (geomorphical hazards).
