Workplace Safety Flashcards
6 hazardous situations that can cause injury
- Exposed fuel tanks
- Compressed natural gas
- Transporting glass with suction cups
- Operating engine
- Batteries
- Welding
5 things to remember besides obvious when working with fuel
Do not turn on ignition with a fuel line disconnected
Do not prime engine with fuel when cranking engine
Do relieve fuel pressure before working on a engine
Do not use fuel to clean anything
Identify fuel rail and air conditioning access ports before attaching text equipment
How to connect a battery (order)
Frozen battery FYI
Turn off charger
Disconnect negative ground first and reconnect negative ground last
Do not jump a frozen battery
Storage of has mat
Neat and orderly
Mist have doors and be kept shut
Well ventilated and properly labeled
Not near fuse panels
What containers must be grounded to eliminate sparks near hazardous materials?
Paint mix tables
Cabinets with Haz mat
Containers used to store or transport flammable materials
Areas of shop most common for emergencies
Hydraulic lines on frame straightener Solvent recyclers Lifts Paint mix room Compressor lines Spray booth
What should you say before striking an arc to alert others in the area
Cover
Signs of acute exposure to Haz May
Flu like symptoms, burns, eye irritation, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, nausea shortness of breath
Long term exposure to Haz Mat can cause these four chronic issues
Extra sensitivity
Nerve damage
Reduced lung capacity
Asthma symptoms
Five items of standard (non corrosive) PPE in a body shop are:
Personal protective equipment
Gloves Boots Full suit Safety glasses Face shield
Isocyanates are:
Common ingredient in catalysts, hardeners, adhesives, and body fillers and typically mixed in to help harden the material.
When are you exposed to isocyanates
Mixing, pouring, applying body filler, adhesives and when welding a panel with catalyzed finish residue
Isocyanates common exposure and common symptoms
I suppose I need to can we do your skin or lungs becoming extremely sensitive to exposure. Once sensitized, even a very small exposure can trigger an adverse reaction including asthma attacks.
Evidence indicates that isocyanate sensitization can also be caused by skin exposure.skin reactions include rashes itching hives and swelling of arms and legs.
Exposure time and how to protect against isocyanates
Immediate or hours, sensitization can become permanent.
Isocyanates have no taste or smell, impossible to know if overexposed. Exposure can happen when opening and mixing product, applying product, welding exposed surfaces.
Use a NIOSH approved supplied site full face hood respirator, butyl rubber gloves, painters goggles when applying isocyanates.
If exposed on skin, wash with soap and water 15 minutes.
How long can HIV live in tissue cultures?
1-3 days
How long can Hepatitis B live outside the body?
At least a week, possibly up to 30 days.
Four items of PPE for corrosives are:
Goggles
Face shield
Rubber apron
Neoprene gloves
What are corrosives on Ph and what are some common examples?
Extremely acidic or extremely alkaline
Battery acid
Chemical paint stripper
Concentrated Degreaser
Sodium hydroxide
3 nerve toxins:
Toluene
Xylene
Methyl-ethyl ketone
Common nerve toxins on a shop:
Weld thru primer Glazing putty Rubbing compound Solvents and adhesives Urethane Clear coats Buffing compounds Polishes
Blood toxin/carcinogen sign looks like:
Guy with asterisk through body.
Destroy red blood cells reducing oxygen through the body, leading to difficulty breathing, and unconsciousness.
Aerosol cleaners, finish remover, adhesive cleaner, acrylic enamel, and reducers
Skull and crossbones beans:
Acute toxicity: poison, acids, immediate and toxic effect
Flame over a circle means:
Oxidizers. Facilitate burning or makes fires burn hotter or longer
Beaker poring on hand
Corrosive: eye and skin burn on contact
Exclamation point sign means
Irritant: eye skin or respiratory irritant
Body with asterisk sign means:
Health hazard: carcinogen/cancer causing, respiratory, reproductive or organ toxicity, chronic or long term health hazard.
Difference between a cute and chronic health hazard signs:
Skull and crossbones acute
Man with asterisk chronic
What is ANSI?
American national standards institute
What ANSI rating must be printed in eye or face protection?
Z87
What does NIOSH stand for?
National Institute for occupational safety and health
What Piece of equipment must be approved by anaya house otherwise it’s a violation of OSHA regulations?
Respirators
Are fumes solid or gas particulates?
Solid, given off welding
Black respirator filters protect against
Organic vapors
Purple or pink respirator flyers protect against
Particulates
Yellow respirator f I’ll test protect against
Acid gas AND organic vapor
Respirator filter codes mean:
N95
R95
P95
N non oil resistant
R is oil resistant
P is oil proof
95, 99 and 100 are efficiently. The 100 is technically 99.97%
