What is the health and safety at work act (HASAWA)?
A
This act covers the minimum standards and applies to all places of work and also sets out the general duties that employers have towards employees and members of the public

What must employers do under HASAWA?
A
- provide a safe place of work for employees (emergency exits etc)
- provide safe equipment and ongoing maintenance (regular checks)
- provide info about safety in the workplace and provide training programmes and advice to employees
- provide info to all employees about health and safety (notice boards)
- provide written health and safety policy (ensuring details are up to date)
- provide a safety representative to represent employees’ needs

What must employees do under HASAWA?
A
- take reasonable care of the health and safety of themselves and report any faults
- take reasonable care for the health and safety of other people, be observant and report any hazards
- co operate with the employer or line manager by attending health and safety sessions and knowing organisational policy on health and safety
- refrain from interfering with anything provided for h&s and never operate machinery they are not authorised to

What are the main principles of the data protection act legislation?
A
- data must be obtained fairly and lawfully
- must be accurate and kept to date
- must be adequate, relevant and not excessive
- must be held securely
- must not be held for longer than necessary
- cannot be transferred out of the EU
- must be used for registered and lawful purposes
- must be processed in accordance with the individual’s rights
- should be allowed access to the data with undue expense
