What does Acts mean?
Law that outlines a workplace’s responsibilities and duties to ensure a safe workplace
What does Regulations mean?
The standards that need to be met for specific risks and hazards that are in a workplace.
Also set out the license needed for specific activities and any records or reports that need documenting
What is a Regulator?
The organization responsible for making sure that workplaces follow the Act and any regulations required. They hold inspections and provide information for workplace and health safety
What is the Codes of practice?
Provide guidance and advice for specific elements of workplace health and safety. Codes are easy to read and give advice for employees on how to implement the acts in order with the legislation and regulations
What is the duty of care?
A legal obligation to anticipate and address potential hazards that could cause injury or illness in the workplace.
Employees also have responsibilities to stay safe and prevent injuries in the workplace
What are some employer rights and responsibilities?
Provide safe machinery, equipment and materials including personal protective equipment (PPE)
Provide information, training and supervision
A clear procedure for employees to report potential hazards
Inform employees of hazards in a workplace
Conduct regular safety inspections
What are some employee rights and responsibilities?
Not work if they are impaired with drugs or alcohol
Not be reckless or misuse machinery/equipment
Participate in WHS meetings
Always wear PPE
What is the step procedure for risk management procedure?
Identify - identify the hazard
Assess - Assess the likelihood and consequence
Control - Decide on what to do to control the risk and implement them
Monitor - monitor and review the control measures implemented
What controls can be put into place when there is a hazard?
Elimination- Physically remove the hazard
Reduce the risk- substitute or isolate the risk
Admin controls- Change the way the work is done
PPE- use personal protective equipment
What should be documented?
The hazard identified
The likelihood and consequence of risk
How was it controlled
And what was implemented
What is a workplace emergency?
A situation that threatens employees, customers or the public
Be planned, prepared and practiced for them
What are the 4 steps to do in an emergency?
Take care of yourself
Understand the situation
Follow policies and procedures for acting in an emergency
After emergency look after personal injuries, check on others
What are some safe work practices?
Correctly wearing PPE
Not under influence of alcohol or drugs at work
Take designated breaks
Having safe posture and movements
Safely using machinery in accordance with workplace procedures
What to do when reporting incidents?
Report it to the designated WHS person
Workplaces must report and keep records of serious accidents, emergencies or deaths
You will be required to complete an incident form
Report may or may not be sent to WorkSafe depending on how serious
