WORKING MEMORY MODEL Flashcards
What is the WMM
Baddeleys proposal
Contains 4 main components , each of which is qualitatively different in terms of capacity and coding
The central executive
Co ordinates the activities of the three slave systems
- limited capacity
- receives info from sensory register and LTM
Phonological loop
Salve system
-deals with auditory system
Phonological store - store what words you hear
The articulatory process- allows for maintenance rehearsal in loop - capacity of loop is 2 seconds
Visuospatial sketchpad
Stores visual and spatial info when required
Divided in
Visual cache- stores visual data
Inner scribe - records the arrangement of objects in visual field
How many windows does ur house have
Episodic buffer
Later addition
Integrates the stores together to maintain a sense of time and sequencing for events
Evaluation- little known about CE
Critics argue that CE may not be a single element
ESLINGER ET AL
Patient had poor decision making skills after tumor removal
But the CE was functional still
Suggests that there may be other parts of CE that WMM is unable to explain
Evaluation, clinical evidence support
Shallice and Warrington 1970
KF
Had poor STM ability for verbal info but not for visual
- suggests the presence of visiospatial sketchpad and phonological loop
BUT Evidence from patients with brain damage is unreliable due to unique class of people and traumatic experiences
Evaluation dual task performances supports
Baddeley et al 1975
Ps had more difficulty doing 2 visual tasks than a verbal and visual at the same time.
Suggests the 2 separate stores able to work at same time
