Working memory model 1974 Flashcards
Memory theories
what did the WMM propose?
a multi-component system including the central executive, visuospatial sketchpad, phonological loop and episodic buffer
an explanation for STM
what is the dual-task paradigm?
performing two tasks simultaneously
what is the role of the central executive?
decides which tasks are prioritised / allocates tasks to slave systems
what is the capacity of the central executive?
limited storage capacity
what is the phonological loop?
one of the slave systems
split into the phonological store (inner ear) and the articulatory control process (inner voice)
what is the function of the phonological store?
deals with auditory info.
preserves info. in the order that it arrives
(coding is acoustic)
what is the capacity of the phonological store?
determined by the length of time it takes to say the words
if the word is polysyllabic it is harder to rehearse
‘word length effect’
what is the function of the articulatory control process?
allows maintenance rehearsal
what is the capacity of the articulatory control process?
two seconds worth of what you can say
what is the function of the visuospatial sketchpad?
holds information that we see, and manipulated spatial info. such as shapes, colour and position of objects
what is the capacity of the visuospatial sketchpad?
3-4 objects
Logie 1995
subdivided the VSS into the visual cache (stores visual data e.g. images) and the inner scribe (records the arrangement of objects in a visual field)
what is the function of the episodic buffer?
added in 2000
temporary store for info , integrating the visual, spatial and verbal information
what is the capacity of the episodic buffer?
3-4 chunks
