Multi-store model of memory 1968 Flashcards
Memory theories
what does the multi-store memory model propose?
three main stores - sensory memory, long term, short term
info. is passed from store to store in a linear way
how is info. encoded in the sensory memory?
one register for each sensory modality (e.g. visual, auditory, haptic)
what is the duration of the sensory memory?
less than half a second
what is the capacity of the sensory memory?
very large (over 100 million cells in each eye storing info.)
how is information retrieved from the sensory memory?
scanning
how is information passed to the short term memory from the sensory memory?
info. must be paid attention to.
if it is not payed attention to, it decays
how is info. encoded in the STM?
mainly acoustically
what is the duration of the STM?
up to 30 seconds (rehearsal extends duration)
what is the capacity of the STM?
limited to 7+/-2 items (5-9)
can be overcome by chunking
how is information passed from the STM to LTM?
must be elaborately rehearsed, or info. is displaced (new info. takes the place of old info.)
how is info. encoded in the LTM?
semantically
what is the duration of the LTM?
potentially unlimited
what is the capacity of the LTM?
potentially unlimited
