2
Q

Central Executive

A

Drives the whole system and allocates data to the subsystems
Deals with cognitive tasks such as mental arithmetic and problem solving

Q

Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad (inner eye)

A

Stores and processed information in a visual or spatial form
Used for navigation

Q

Phonological Store (inner ear)

A

Linked to speech perception
Holds info in speech based form for 1-2 seconds

Q

Articulatory control process (inner voice)

A

Linked to speech production
Used to rehearse and store verbal info from the phonological store

10
Q

What did they add in the 2000 update and why

A

Q

Episodic buffer

A

Backup store
Communicated with both long term memory and the components on working memory

12
Q

What case study supports the WMM

A

KF Case Study - brain damage from motorcycle accident which damaged STM
Impairment was mainly verbal and his memory for visual info was largely unaffected
Shows that there are separate STM components for visual (VSS) and verbal (phonological loop) info

Q

How does Baddeley + Hitch 1975 support the WMM

A

Participant perform visual and verbal tasks together and performance on each was no worse when carried out separately

15
Q

How does Lieberman 1980 show a weakness of the model

A

Visio-spatial sketchpad suggestd that all spatial info was first visual
Blind people have excellent spatial awareness though have never had any visual info
Should be separated into 2 different components

16
Q

Weakness: there is a lack of ….. over …..

A

Lack of clarity over central executive
Capacity has never been measured
Baddeley said it was the “least understood component”
Not fully explained so working model is incomplete

17
Q

How is the episodic buffer that was added in the 2000 a weakness

A

Temporary store that refers to how to recall info
Now includes LTM but didn’t have it before so was incomplete/didn’t fully make sense
