Q

What does the central executive do ?

A

. Drives whole system
. Allocated data + attention to the subsystems

Q

What does the episodic buffer do ?

A

. Brings together visual, spatial and verbal info to the LTM and back
. Temp store of info

Q

What did Baddeley and Hitch believe ?

A

Believed STM isn’t just one store
When participants preformed 2 visual tasks - poor
No problem with 1 visual and 1 verbal task

Q

What does the visuo-spatial sketchpad do ?

A

. Stores and processes visual and spatial information

Logie subdivided it into:
. visual cache = stores visual material about form and colour

. Inner scribe = handles spatial relationships and rehearses, transfers info in the visual cache to the central executive

^ Limited capacity = 3-4 objects

Q

What does the phonological loop do ?

A

. Deals with spoken and written materials

Baddeley subdivided it into:
. phonological store = stores words we hear for 1-2 seconds

Articulatory control process = processes speech production, rehearses what we can say

Q

What case study evidence is there ?

A

KF
. short term forgetting of auditory info was much greater than that of visual info
Brain damage seemed to be restricted to phonological loop - not affecting his visuo spatial sketchpad
^ supports idea of seperate components of STM

Q

What research support is there ?

A

Baddeley et al word length effect study
. Participants asked to remember single or multi syllable words - more participants could remember single syllable words: word length effect
. When prevented from rehersing the words the word length effect dissapeared
^ strong evidence phonological loop exists

Q

What scientific evidence is there ?

A

Neuroimaging research
. Used PET scans when participants were preforming either verbal or visual tasks
. Found very different areas of the brain were active during each task
. Showed verbal and visual tasks are preformed by different parts of the brain
. Suggests phonological loop and visuo - spatial sketchpad are physically seperate
