Coding, Capacity, Duration Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 2 types of memory ?

A

Short term = picks up information from surroundings but doesn’t acknowledge it unless its rehursed

Long term = permanent store holding unlimited amounts of info for long periods of time

Q

What is the study on coding

A

Baddeley
Split participants into 4 groups of acoustically similar/dissimilar words and the same for semantic
^ LTM is semantically coded and STM is acoustically coded

A

Jacobs
Developed digit span - string of numbers
STM has limited capactiy of 5-9 items LTM is unlimited

Q

What is the study on duration

A

Peterson and Peterson
undergrad students took part in 8 trials in a lab. On each trial student was given a constanant syllable.
Interference task - also given a 3 digit number to count down from. Told to stop at different times on the trial

Shows when rehersal is limited very little stays in the STM for longer than 18 seconds. Overall between 18-30 seconds
