working memory model Flashcards
who proposed it
baddeley and hitch 1974
they first proposed the model as a three component short term memory system. they criticised the msm for being too simplistic and for emphasising the role of rehearsal as being critical to learning. they set out to understand STM as a complex and active working memory.
central executive
-allocates memories to the slave systems
-it retrieves information from the 5 senses or from LTM and assigns it to the loop or VSS for processing
- limited processing capacity
-modality free so can deal with different types of sensory info
phonological loop
- deals with auditory information
-preserves the order in which the information arrives
-subdivided into
1 the phonological store
stores what you hear (inner ear)
2 articulatory control system
allows maintenance rehearsal (repeating words, sounds in a loop)
to keep them in working memory
(inner voice)
VSS
- temporarily store visual and spatial info
-limited capacity
episodic buffer
-temporary store that integrates the acoustic, visual and spatial info processed by the other slave systems
-recording events that are happening(episodes)
-limited capacity
- combines info
a temporary storage system that is able to combine information from
the loop, the sketchpad, long-term memory, or indeed from perceptual
input, into a coherent episode
evidence
dual task experiments
application
education
revising whilst listening to music could overload PL
S/W
-reductionist - does not consider the role of emotion of ID in memory.
does not consider how STM transfers to LTM not a complete explanation
-hypothetical constructs
eg CE we cannot measure these aspects of the model in complete isolation and therefore lacks objective measurements.
this decreases how scientific theory is and reduces validity
alternative
MSM
-provides more detail in STM
-may be more complete
