HM Flashcards
AIM
to investigate how his memory has been affected from the removal of the hippocampus.
procedure
-researchers conducted lots of tests to determine what he can/can’t do.
-eg mirror tasks, solving puzzles
-interviews, observations, qualitative data
results
-retrograde amnesia (loss of memory prior to brain surgery)
-anterograde amnesia (can’t create new memories)
-his LTM was tested but never improved - would read same magazines
-his STM still worked
conclusion
LTM damaged, ST okay
generalisability
:( can’t generalise, unique case
:) studying one individual gave a big amount of data about a brain damage person which have been used to develop our understanding on memory and how it supports the models.
reliability
:) standardised methods were used eg 5 point stat task, this meant that his performance could be measured over time
:) research was triangulated - more than one method
:( interviews generated biographical info, so not reliable as the memory of individuals may not be consistent.
validity
+ all the experiments were looking at memory
- the biographical data might not be valid ecologically
ethics
+ his name kept confidential
- didn’t give consent
- the testing could of put him under stress
