Q

What is the working memory model

A

It is a representation of STM. It suggests that STM is a dynamic processor of different types of information using sub-units coordinated by a central decision-making system.

Q

What is the Central Executive

A

It is the component of the WMM that coordinates the activities of the three subsystems in memory. It also allocates processing resources to those activities

Q

What is the phonological loop

A

It is the component of the WMM that processes information in terms of sound. This includes both written and spoken material. It’s divided in the phonological store and articulatory process.

Q

What is the visuo spatial sketchpad

A

It is the component of the WMM that processes visual and spatial information in mental space often called our inner eye.

Q

What is the episodic buffer

A

It is the component of the WMM that brings together material from the other subsystems into a single memory rather than separate strands. It also provides a bridge between WM and LTM

Q

What are assumptions abou the approach of the WMM

A

Baddeley and Hitch suggest a more complex and dynamic STM than the MSMs version.
● It has several but connected parts, unlike the single STM store of the MSM.
● It is an active system. It allows us to work things through, like mental arithmetic, but has a limited capacity.
● The model consists of four main components: Each of which are qualitatively different - especially in terms of capacity and coding.

16
Q

What does the visuo spatial sketchpad deals with

A

Visual and spatial tasks

17
Q

What are the 2 subcomponents of VSS

A

Inner scribe and visual cache

18
Q

What is the inner scribe

A

It deals with the spatial relationship between objects

19
Q

What is the visual cache

A

It stores visual information

20
Q

When was the episodic buffer added to the model

A

In 2000

21
Q

What does the EB do

A

Binds all the information together and sends it to the LTM

22
Q

Why did Baddeley add the EB

A

Because he realised that the model had no general storage facility

23
Q

What was the theory behind the WMM

A

Dual task performance, it illustrates tgat there is no interference when 2 tasks are being performed together

24
Q

What was observed with with the dual task performance

A

If both were visual, each task was reformed slower compared to if one was visual and one was auditory

25
Q

What are the strengths if WMM

A

.patient study on KF supported the existence of separate visual and acoustic stores
.dual task performance provides evidence for visuospatial sketchpad

26
Q

What is a limitation of WMM

A

.lack of clarity
.cog psychologists don’t think this model really explains anything
.evidence from brain damaged patie to to always reliable as ut is a unique case
