Multi Store Memory Model Flashcards
What js the Multi Store Memory model based on
Features of STM, LTM and sensory register and the process and transfer of each store, what makes memories last and disappeared
What is sensory register
Jt sis the memory store for each of our 5 senses. Coding is based on the senses. Capacity is huge, millions kf receptors, and duration js very short , less than half a second
Who created the MSM
Atkinson and Shiffrin
Describe the sensory register
All stimuli from the environment go through the SR. Coding is dependent on the sense and its store, duration js very brief and the capacity is very high. Info passes further into the memory store only if you pay attention
What is the coding for visual info
Iconic memory
What is the coding for acoustic sounds
Echoic memory
If info is given attention, what store does it go to
STM
When does maintenance rehearsal occur
When we repeat material to ourselves over and over again and that way we can keep it in our STM
What happens if we rehears the info for too long
If it is rehearsed for too long, it will transfer tk the LTM
What is retrieval
A process where according to the MSM, when we want to recall info from LTM, it has to be transferred back into the STM by this process
What is a strength of MSM
It supports studies that show STM and LTM are different. Further support comes from the studies of capacity and duration. These all clearly show that STM and LTM are different
What are the 3 limitations
.they used artificial and meaningless material, meaning MSM may nkt be a valid model of how out everyday memory works
.evidence of more than one STM store, meaning that the MSM is wrong to claim there is only one STM store
.prolonged rehearsal is not needed to transfer to LTM, MSM doesn’t fully explain how long term storage is achieved
What are the 3 types of long term memory
Episodic, semantic, procedural
Define episodic memory
A LTM store for personal events. It includes memories of when the events occurred and of the people, objects, places and behaviours involved. Memories from this store have to be retrieved consciously and with effort.
Define semantic memory
A LTM memory store for our knowledge of the real world. This included facts and our knowledge of what words and concepts mean. There memories usually also need to be recalled deliberately.
Define procedural memory
A LTM memory store for our knowledge of how to do things. This includes our memories of learned skills. We usually recall these memories without making conscious or deliberate effort
What are the features of episodic memory
. Complex
.Time stamped
.remember people places ect…
.you make a conscious effort to recall them
What are the features of semantic memory
.not time stamped
.less personal
.more about the knowledge that we share
What are the features of procedural memory
.recall without great effort
.we can recall without councils awareness
.it could be hard to explain
Which 2 types of memory are explicit
Episodic and semantic
Which memory store is implicit
Procedural
Where is episodic memory stored in the brain
Hippocampus
Where is the semantic stored in the brain
Temporal lobe
Where is procedural memory stored in the brain
Cerebellum and motor cortex
Qhat are the 3 strengths of LTM
.supported by case study evidence
.brain scan studies provide evidence of different stores
.can be applied to real life
What are the 2 limitations of LTM
.despite the strength of clinical studies, they lack control of variables
.there is conflicting research in findings that link types of LTM to areas of the brain
Who is the psychologist that is responsible for the idea of LTM
Tulving
