working memory model Flashcards
ao1- wmm
-baddeley and hitch (1974) developed the wmm focuses specifically on the workings of short-term memory
-proposed made up of three limited capacity stores
-central executive-this manages attention, and controls information from the two ‘slave stores’
-phonological loop –holds 2s of info, codes acoustically:
- articulatory control system (‘inner voice’), any language presented visually converted to a phonological state, for storage in the:
- phonological store (‘inner ear’), holds auditory speech information
-visuo-spatial sketchpad – this temporarily retains visual and spatial information
ao3 wmm- kf example
-kf suffered brain damage from motorcycle accident
-had issues with ltm
-unable to recall verbal (acoustic) info but could still process visual
-suggests phonological loop damaged but vss still intact
ao3 wmm- CE too vague
-doesn’t really explain anything
-Baddeley admitted it’s ‘least understood’ component of the wmm more research needed to provide evidence for its role
-lack of clarity questions the validity of this part of the model as its not fully explained or developed
-however there’s some brain scan evidence from Braver (1997) to support the existence of the CE where p’s were given a task involving the CE and activity was seen in prefrontal cortex. but more research needed in this area
