conformity
change in behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure
normative social influence (NSI)
person conforms bc they need to be accepted by the group. publicly conform but privately disagree and keep their old attitude
explaining NSI
asch’s line study
informational social influence (ISI)
based on our need to be right. sometimes we don’t know what to do and conform to what others are doing bc they might know instead. publicly conform and privately agree.
strength of nsi/isi
empirical evidence supporting the explanation that people conform to others bc they need to be liked/correct.
limitation of nsi and isi
-doesn’t consider individual differences
-may not offer a complete explanation of the reasons people conform may conform for reasons not measured by the model
-nsi and isi have been viewed as separate binary explanations in conformity but they could be working together
