Working Memory Model Flashcards
1
Q
Working memory model
A
- proposed by Bradley and hitch
- focuses on short term memory
- considers the fact that STM is more complex than just one store
2
Q
In the working memory model what does the episodic buffer do
A
- binds and integrates information from all the other components
- sends information to the long term memory
3
Q
What happened with the patient HM
A
- in an attempt to control his seizures Hm underwent brain surgery to remove his hippocampus and amygdala
- after surgery his seizures decreased but he could to longer form new memories or remember the prior 11 years of his life
4
Q
Why H.M is not the best case study
A
- ONE PERSON - can’t generalise
-ONE OFF CASE - lacks reliability
5
Q
What are the three types of long term memory
A
- episodic memory- events in our lives in chronological order
- semantic - meaning, knowledge eg reading
- procedural - how we do things eg driving
6
Q
What does the episodic buffer do
A
The episodic buffer binds and integrates information from all the other components, and sends information to the long term memory
7
Q
What does the Visio spatial sketch pad so
A
- temporary storage of visual and spatial information,
- visual cache stores visual data
- inner scribe records the arrangement of objects in the visual field
8
Q
What does the phonological loop do
A
- deals with auditory information and preserves the order in which the information arrives
-the phonological store, stores words you hear - articulatory process allows maintenance rehearsal (repeating sounds in a loop to keep them in working memory)
9
Q
Sensory register
A
- large capacity - miller 7+-2
- coding - senses
- small duration - Peterson & Peterson - her herbal duration = 18-30 secs
- when attention is paid it transfers to the STM -
- acoustically
10
Q
LTM
A
- Barack found that duration can be a lifetime
- capacity unlimited
- it would be necessary to retrieve information from LTM
