Working memory model Flashcards
What are the components of WMM
Central executive Episodic buffer Visuo-spatial sketchpad Articulatory control system Phonological loop Long term memory
Who created the WMM and what is it
Baddeley and Hitch . An explanation of how STM is organised and how it functions
For eg WMM is concerned with the part of the mind that is active when working in an arithmetic problem
Describe Central executive
an attentional process which monitors incoming data
and allocates slave systems to tasks
CE : coding flexible and limited capacity
Describe Phonological loop and what it subdivided into
processes auditory information arrives then subdivided to:
- phonological store: stores the words you hear
- articulatory process : allows maintenance rehearsal
Describe Visuo-spatial sketchpad and what it is sub-divided into
stores visual/spatial information when required
Logie 1995 subdivided into:
visual cache : stores visual data
inner scribe : records arrangement of objects in visual field
episodic buffer (4)
- added in 2000
-temporary store for information
-integrates visual, spatial and verbal information from other stores
-maintains sense of time sequencing (records events that are happening)
links to LTM
Name the coding and capacity for each store
PL: co is acoustic, cap is 2 seconds of what you can say
VSS: co is visual spatial ;cap is 3-4 objects
EB: co is flexible ; cap is 4 chunks
Name 3 strengths of WMM
- case of KF supports separate STM stores
- word length effect supports the phonological loop
- dual task performance studies support the VSS
Name 1 limitations of WMM
-lack of clarity over the central executive
